This roller pedigree is one of only two still known to be in existence that originated from the old Jermy family of Norfolk. Most of the other family documents were lost or destroyed after the death of William Jermy in 1752. A note on the back of the vellum states that it is an Old Pedigree Visitation by John Jermy. It may have been made around 1700 by John Jermy of Bayfield, the father of William, and it traces the Jermy family from Sir William Jermy, knight, who was alive in 1221. His son Sir John Jermy, knight, supposedly married Margery, the second daughter of Roger Bigod, the Earl Marshall of England. It is likely that the first few generations are wishful thinking however, since there is little evidence that the named daughters of Roger Bigod and John Balliol actually existed. The roller pedigree was in the possession of Isaac Preston-Jermy of Stanfield Hall when he was murdered in 1848. It passed to his grand daughter's husband, Major Reginald Preston Jermy Gwyn, and then to his son Brigadier Philip E C Jermy Gwyn. Brigadier Gwyn donated the document to Stewart Valdar in 1958, who more recently gave it to myself. The document has since been donated to the Norfolk Record Office. Comments on the pedigree made by John Goodall of the British Museum, are that it is an amateur effort, artistically and genealogically, the latter since the earlier arms are supplied and the gaps appear later (instead of the reverse). Early 18th century, although the style and development are reminiscent of the 17th century and early pedigrees. The later sections are more worn (by reference?) than the earlier. The document most certainly is not the product of a professional pedigree artist, but the work of the amateur John Jermy. It would appear that most of the paints used have reacted with the vellum, changing colour and leaving a number of stains on some of the coats of arms. The arms themselves, where present, are very poorly drawn and coloured. It is interesting that although the title states that it is The Pedigree of John Jermy of Bayfield in Norfolk, the pedigree covers all the main branches of the family, ending with John Jermy, the son of William Jermy and Ann Boys of Stutton; and John Jermy, the son of John Jermy and Jane Chare of Bayfield. At the bottom of the vellum the combined coat of arms of Edward Isaac of Well Court, Kent, and those of Francis Jermy of Heynsford, Norfolk are followed by the combined coat of arms of John Jermy of Stutton. The final coat of arms, helm, crest and motto are for John Jermy of Bayfield. |
